FLUBIO

Open positions for Ph.D. students

Marie Curie Early Stage Training Site at the University of Genova, Italy

The FLUBIO Marie Curie Early Stage Training Site is a EU project located at the University of Genova providing outstanding training in the field of basic and applied fluid mechanics to young researchers, through research, coursework and a range of complementary training activities. The EST site is based at Environmental Engineering Department (DICAT), one of the centres of research excellence of the University. Research/educational competences of the permanent team members of FLUBIO cover a wide spectrum of topics in Basic, Environmental and Biological Fluid Mechanics.

We are currently seeking outstanding young graduates, holding Master´s degree (or equivalent qualification) in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics and/or Bio-Ecology, ready to join this exciting new graduate programme and conduct research in one of the following fields:

FUNDAMENTAL FLUID MECHANICS: stability of fluid flows and transition to turbulence, wall-bounded turbulence, wave instability and its active control, mechanisms of sediment transport, shallow water turbulence and mixing;

ENVIRONMENTAL FLUID MECHANICS: near-shore hydrodynamics, wave propagation, tidal and long wave mechanics, hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of rivers, estuaries and lagoons;

BIO-FLUID MECHANICS: fish-like propulsion and its optimisation, dynamics of the ocular vitreous, motion of biological fluids. Research is to be conducted by either experimental, theoretical or numerical means.

Two types of candidates will be considered:

SST: Short Stay Trainees These are typically students already enrolled in the PhD programme of another University and wishing to conduct a short programme of study/research at the University of Genova to complete their educational project. They will be admitted for periods ranging from three months to one year and will not be enrolled as PhD students at the University of Genova.
LST: Long Stay Trainees Such trainees can be enrolled at the University of Genova as PhD candidates and will be financially supported for periods of up to three years.

Very competitive salaries, based on EU salary scale. Allowances for specific initiatives aimed at career development and for accompanying families. Application of women particularly encouraged.
